Slack Export to PDF

Slack export to PDF: one channel or DM, readable from start to finish

Upload the .zip that Slack's export creates and get one PDF of the channel or direct message you choose: every message numbered with its date and time, names instead of user IDs, thread replies linked to the message they answer, reactions and file names kept. The first messages are free, with no sign-up. The whole channel costs $5: one payment, no subscription.

Each translation is printed under the original message, so both stay on the record.

The export holds every channel. Type a channel name, or a person's name to find a DM; leave it empty and the longest channel is used.

No sign-up. A chat of up to 150 messages (with up to 5 minutes of voice messages) is free in full. Longer chats: the first messages free, the whole chat $5, one payment.

By continuing you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

  • Reads the standard Slack workspace export: users.json, channels.json and one JSON file per channel per day
  • Names instead of user IDs, in messages and in mentions such as @Priya or #site-log
  • Thread replies kept in time order, each pointing to the number of the message it answers
  • Reactions with who reacted, edited and deleted messages marked, joins and topic changes as notes
  • Optional translation of every message into English or 38 other languages
  • SHA-256 fingerprint of the export file on the first page · PDF, TXT and CSV downloads
  • One flat $5 per channel or DM, up to 10,000 messages · chats of up to 150 messages free in full, first messages of longer ones free

What you get back

One PDF of one channel or direct message, laid out to be read, printed or handed to HR or a lawyer. A cover page names the channel, the people in it, the period it covers and how many messages it holds, with the fingerprint of the export file. Then come the messages, in order, grouped by day.

  • Each message with its number, sender, date and time, in the time zone named on the cover.
  • Mentions and channel links written as names, links shown with their address.
  • Thread replies at the time they were posted, marked "reply to #n" so a reader can follow the thread.
  • Reactions with the names of the people who reacted, and a note on edited messages.
  • Files listed by name where they were shared. A Slack export does not contain the files themselves.
  • The same messages as plain text (TXT) and as a spreadsheet (CSV), one row per message.

Other ways to read a Slack export

Inside Slack, a channel is easy to scroll. Once it has been exported, or you need it as one document someone else can read, the options get worse.

What you need The raw export or a chatbot This tool
A few messages to quote A screenshot from Slack works well Works too, but you do not need it
A whole channel from the export Hundreds of JSON files, one per day, with user IDs instead of names One document in order, with names, up to 10,000 messages per channel
Threads Replies sit in separate places in the JSON Every reply points to the number of the message it answers
A large export Too big to paste into a chatbot; it reads part of it Reads every day file in the ZIP
Messages in another language Translates what you paste Optional translation printed under every message
Proof of which file it came from None SHA-256 fingerprint of the export file on the cover

How to turn a Slack export into a PDF

  1. 1

    Export the workspace from Slack

A workspace owner or admin opens Workspace settings, then Import/Export data, then Export. Choose the date range and start the export; Slack sends a link to download the .zip.

  2. 2

Upload the .zip and check the first messages free

Drop the .zip here without unzipping it. Type a channel name, or a person's name to find a DM, under "Which conversation", or leave it empty for the longest channel. The first part appears in a few seconds.

  3. 3

Unlock the whole channel and download

Unlock it for $5 and download the PDF, the text file or the spreadsheet.

Why a Slack export is hard to read

Slack's export is built to move data between systems, not to be read. Every channel is a folder, every day is a separate JSON file, people and mentions appear as codes such as U05HLC3B2, and thread replies are mixed in with the rest of the day. Opening it in a browser shows raw data; a chatbot can make sense of one file, but not of a channel that runs to hundreds of files.

This tool reads the whole export. It builds the list of people from users.json, puts each channel's days back together in order, writes mentions as names, links every thread reply to its parent message by number, and lays out the channel or DM you choose.

What people use it for

  • Employment disputes and HR complaints: hours, pay, warnings and what a manager said, in order
  • Handing a channel to a lawyer or an investigator as one numbered document
  • Keeping the history of a free workspace before old messages are deleted
  • Closing down a project or a company and archiving its channels in a readable form
  • Translating a channel written in another language, message by message

What a Slack export contains

Only workspace owners and admins can export. On the Free and Pro plans the standard export covers public channels; private channels and direct messages are only in the fuller exports available on higher plans, and the tool reads them when they are there. On the free plan Slack deletes messages and files older than one year, so export soon if the history matters.

The export lists files by name and links to them on Slack's servers, which need a login; the files themselves are not in the ZIP. The PDF names every file where it was shared. Times are stored as exact moments and shown in the time zone of the browser you upload from, named on the cover. Uploads can be up to 2 GB.

Accuracy, evidence and what this is not

The text of each message is copied from the export as stored, with Slack's formatting codes turned into readable names and links. Translations are machine translations; check anything that matters against the original, which is always printed first.

The PDF is a readable record of the export, not a forensic report, and it does not show messages that were deleted before the export was made. The SHA-256 fingerprint on the cover lets anyone confirm which export file the PDF was made from; keep that file unchanged. NoCutoff does not give legal advice.

Questions and answers

How do I turn a Slack export into a PDF?

Upload the .zip from Slack's Import/Export data page here, type the channel name, check the first messages free, then unlock the whole channel for $5 and download the PDF. Every message is numbered, with names instead of user IDs and threads linked.

Can I export a single channel instead of the whole workspace?

Slack exports the whole workspace into one .zip. Upload that file as it is and type the name of the channel you want; the PDF covers that one channel. Each other channel in the same export is a separate job.

Are direct messages included?

Only if they are in the export. The standard export on the Free and Pro plans covers public channels. When the export contains direct messages, type the other person's name to pick the conversation.

Are files and images included?

They are listed by name where they were shared. A Slack export does not contain the files themselves, only links to Slack's servers that need a login, so they cannot be printed.

How are threads shown?

Each reply appears at the time it was posted and is marked "reply to #n", the number of the message that started the thread, so you can follow a thread and still see what was happening in the channel at the same time.

I am not an admin. Can I still use it?

You need the export file, and only workspace owners and admins can create it. Ask an admin for the export, or for the channel you need.

Is the PDF accepted as evidence?

That is for the court, the tribunal or your lawyer to decide. The PDF is a readable record with exact senders, dates and times and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the export file, but it is not a forensic report. Ask your lawyer what they need.

Is my data private?

Only you can open your job. The file you upload is deleted as soon as it has been read. Messages are sent to an AI model provider only if you ask for a translation, through routes that do not use your data for training. Jobs uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job at any time.

How much does it cost?

The first messages are free without an account. One whole channel or DM is $5, paid once, for up to 10,000 messages, with PDF, TXT and CSV downloads. Unlimited costs $19 a week (it renews weekly, cancel any time) and covers every tool on the site. Small jobs are the exception: a channel or DM of up to 150 messages is free in full, downloads included.
