What you get back
One PDF of the conversation, laid out to be read, printed or handed to someone else. A cover page names the conversation, the people in it, the period it covers, the time zone used and the file it was made from. Then come the messages, in order, grouped by day.
- Each message with its number, sender, date and time. Facebook stores times in UTC; they are converted to the time zone of your browser and the cover says which one.
- Voice messages written out word for word in a box at the point they were sent, with their length, file name and detected language.
- If you choose a translation, it appears under the original text and under each transcript. The original always comes first.
- Photos and GIFs shown in the flow of the chat, several photos sent together each in their place; videos as a still frame with their length; files listed by name.
- Calls with their length, shared links, unsent-message markers and reactions kept where they happened.
- An index of every voice message at the end, and the same content as plain text (TXT) and as a spreadsheet (CSV).
Doing it in a chatbot, and with this tool
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can read a short chat you paste in. A Facebook download is a different thing: a folder per conversation, the messages split over several JSON or HTML files, text in a broken encoding, and every voice message in its own audio file.

How to turn a Messenger chat into a PDF

Request your messages from Facebook
In Facebook, open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information. Pick your Facebook profile, choose Specific types of information → Messages, then Download to device. Set the date range, choose JSON as the format and click Create files.

Download the file when Facebook emails you
Preparing the file usually takes from a few minutes to a few hours. Download the .zip from the same page. If Facebook splits it into several parts, upload all of them together.

Upload it and pick the conversation
Drop the .zip here and type the name of the person or group under "Which conversation". Pick a translation language if you need one. No account is needed. The first part of the chat appears in a few seconds, voice messages written out.

Why chat assistants cannot do this one
Facebook's download is built for machines, not readers. Each conversation is a folder with message_1.json (the newest messages), message_2.json and so on, plus audio, photos and videos folders. Letters with accents and every emoji are stored as escaped bytes, so "José" reads "José". A voice message is only a file path; the words are in the audio file. A chat assistant sees the scrambled text and the file names, and a long conversation gets summarised or cut off.
This tool repairs the text, joins every file of the conversation in date order, follows every attachment to its file, and sends each voice message to a speech model on its own.
End-to-end encrypted chats are downloaded separately
Since December 2023 personal Messenger chats are end-to-end encrypted by default, and those messages are not in Download your information: you will often find only the older part of a conversation there. Messenger offers them separately: on messenger.com, open Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Message storage → Download secure storage data (secure storage has to be turned on). That gives a messages.zip.
You can upload the secure storage messages.zip here as well. Meta changes that newer file more often than the main download, so check the free first part before you pay; if a conversation is not read correctly, write to us. Facebook's files do not record which message a reply answered, so replies appear as ordinary messages in date order.

Accuracy, evidence and what this is not
Voice messages are transcribed by an AI speech model, word for word, in the language spoken. Unclear words are marked [inaudible]. Translations are machine translations. For anything that matters, check the passage against the original audio, which stays in your download.
The PDF is a readable record, not a certified transcript or a certified translation, and it does not prove on its own that a conversation took place. Facebook only includes messages that are still in your account. Keep the downloaded file unchanged: the SHA-256 fingerprint on the cover lets anyone confirm the PDF was made from it.

How do I save a whole Messenger conversation as a PDF?
Download your messages from Facebook (Accounts Center → Download your information → Messages, format JSON), upload the .zip here, type the person's name under "Which conversation" and download the PDF. Every voice message is written out where it was sent. The first messages are free; the whole chat is $5, paid once.
Why are some recent messages missing from my Facebook download?
Personal Messenger chats have been end-to-end encrypted by default since December 2023, and those messages are not in Download your information. Download them from messenger.com under Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Message storage → Download secure storage data, and upload that messages.zip too.
Should I choose JSON or HTML when I request the file?
JSON. It holds the exact time of every message and is read most reliably. HTML downloads are read too, but Facebook's HTML layout changes more often.
The names in my download look like "José". Will the PDF be right?
Yes. That is how Facebook stores accented letters and emoji in its files. The tool repairs them, so the PDF shows "José", "Müller" and every emoji correctly.
My download has hundreds of conversations. Which one do I get?
The one you name under "Which conversation", matched against the conversation title and the people in it. If you leave the field empty, the longest conversation is used; the cover says how many others were in the file.
Can it translate the voice messages into English?
Yes, in the same pass. Choose English when you upload and every message and every voice-message transcript gets a translation printed underneath. The original always comes first.
What time zone are the times in?
Facebook stores every message in UTC. The tool converts the times to the time zone of the browser you upload from and prints that time zone on the cover, so the record says exactly what the times mean.
How much does it cost?
The first messages are free without an account. The whole conversation is $5, paid once, for up to 10,000 messages, with PDF, TXT and CSV downloads. Unlimited costs $29 a month or $180 a year and covers every tool on the site.
Is the PDF accepted as evidence in court?
That is for the court or agency to decide. The PDF is a readable record with senders, dates, times and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the download, but it is not a certified transcript. Ask your lawyer what they need.
Is my data private?
Only you can open your chat. The file you upload is deleted as soon as the chosen conversation has been taken out of it; other conversations in the download are not kept or sent anywhere. Voice messages and text go to an AI model provider only to transcribe and translate them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Chats uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days.
