Why a chatbot struggles with a Malayalam WhatsApp chat
A WhatsApp export is a ZIP file: a text file of the typed messages plus one audio file for every voice note. A chat assistant can read typed text you paste in, but it cannot open the voice notes inside the export, and a family chat between Kerala and a relative working abroad can hold hundreds of them.
Most people type Malayalam in English letters, often called Manglish, while their voice notes are spoken Malayalam with English words mixed in. The tool keeps typed messages exactly as they were typed and writes each voice note as spoken: Malayalam in Malayalam script, English in English.
What people bring
- Voice notes exchanged with an employer, agent or landlord abroad, where what was promised matters
- Family and property matters in Kerala handled by a lawyer
- Voice notes from parents and grandparents, kept as text the family can reread
- Chats for a visa application, where the officer needs English
How to export the chat from your phone
- Open the chat in WhatsApp, tap the name at the top, then Export chat
- Choose to include media, so the voice notes are inside the export
- Save the ZIP (iPhone) or the text file and media (Android) and upload it here
- English is already chosen under "Also translate"; change it or switch it off if you prefer
How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the WhatsApp Chat to PDF page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers
Can it transcribe Malayalam voice notes that mix in English?
Yes. Mixed speech is written as spoken: the Malayalam parts in Malayalam script and the English parts in English. Nothing is converted into one language unless you ask for a translation.
Can I get the Malayalam in Manglish instead?
Not at the moment. Voice notes are written in Malayalam script, which is the most exact record. The English translation under each message is there for readers who do not read Malayalam.
Can it translate into Arabic or Hindi instead of English?
Yes. Choose any of the languages in the list under "Also translate" before you upload, and the translation is printed under each message in that language.
How much does it cost for a long chat?
The first part of the chat is free without an account. The whole chat, up to 10,000 messages with all its voice notes, is $5, paid once. Unlimited covers chats of up to 30,000 messages. A chat of up to 150 messages, with up to 5 minutes of voice messages, is free in full, downloads included.
