Bank statement to Excel
Bank statement converter: turn a PDF statement into Excel or CSV
Upload a bank or credit card statement and get every transaction as a row: date, description, amount and balance. The first page is free, with no sign-up. Need the whole statement? Unlock every page for $5: one payment, no subscription. A chatbot can read a short statement, but on a long one it can drop rows or flip a debit into a credit without telling you. This tool reads page by page, merges all pages into one table, and gives you XLSX or CSV.
- First page free, no account needed
- Whole statement $5, one payment, no subscription
- Four fixed columns: Date, Description, Amount, Balance
- Money out is negative, money in is positive, dates are YYYY-MM-DD
- Works on scanned and photographed statements
- All pages in one table, exported as XLSX or CSV
What you get back
One table with the same four columns on every row, whatever the layout of the statement. The transactions from each page are shown beside the image of that page, so you can check them before you export.
- Date: the transaction date as YYYY-MM-DD. When a row does not print the year, it is taken from the statement period on the page; if it cannot be worked out, the date stays as printed.
- Description: the full description as printed, joined into one line when it wraps over two.
- Amount: one signed number. Withdrawals, payments and fees are negative; deposits and credits are positive. On a credit card statement, purchases are negative and payments or refunds are positive.
- Balance: the running balance after the transaction, or an empty cell if the statement does not print one.
- One merged table for all pages, in the order printed. Opening balances, closing balances, totals and subtotals are not added as transactions.
Converting a bank statement with a chatbot, and with this tool
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can read a statement, and for a one-page statement with a dozen transactions they often do well. The risk grows with the length of the statement, because the errors that matter here are silent ones: a missing row or a wrong sign looks exactly like a correct table.
| Your situation | A chatbot | This tool |
|---|---|---|
| A one-page statement with a few transactions | Often gets it right | Extracts it and gives you the file |
| A 30-page statement | Tends to skip rows, summarize or stop partway | Reads every page separately and merges them into one table |
| Separate debit and credit columns | Can mix up which is which | One signed Amount column: money out negative, money in positive |
| A scanned or photographed statement | Often misreads digits, or cannot read the page at all | Reads every page as an image, so scans work the same way |
| A digit too faint to read | Tends to fill in a plausible number | Leaves the amount empty; unreadable text is marked [illegible] |
| You need a file to import | Often returns a table as text in the chat | Download XLSX or CSV |
How to convert a bank statement to Excel or CSV

1
Upload the statement
Drop in the PDF from your bank, a scan or photos of a paper statement. You can add several files to one document, for example a few months of statements.

2
Check the first page free
The transactions from the first page appear next to the image of the page. Compare the dates, amounts and signs with the original. No account is needed for this step.
-
3
Unlock the rest and download
Happy with the first page? Unlock the whole statement for $5, download XLSX or CSV, and check the result against the closing balance.
Why bank statements trip up general AI assistants
A bank statement is a long, repetitive table, and long repetitive tables are where a chat assistant is weakest. It has to reproduce hundreds of near-identical rows in one reply without losing its place. When it does lose its place, a row disappears or two rows merge, and nothing in the answer shows that it happened.
Layout adds a second problem. Some banks print one amount column with a minus sign. Others print separate columns for money in and money out, or mark debits with a letter. Descriptions wrap over two or three lines. A general assistant has to guess the convention each time, and a wrong guess turns a payment into a deposit.
This tool reads each page on its own with one fixed set of rules: return every transaction in the order printed, never skip or summarize rows, write money out as a negative number and money in as a positive one, and copy digits exactly. Every page produces the same four columns, so the pages join into one table without any cleanup.
What people use it for
- Bookkeeping: getting transactions out of PDF statements and into accounting software
- Tax preparation, when the bank only offers statements as PDF
- Budgeting and expense tracking in a spreadsheet
- Older statements that are no longer available as a download from the bank
- Paper statements that have been scanned or photographed
- Credit card statements, with purchases and payments in one signed column
Always check the result against the closing balance
No reader of documents is perfect, and with money a single wrong digit matters. Before you rely on the file, do two quick checks. First, add up the Amount column: the opening balance plus that total should equal the closing balance printed on the statement. Second, if your statement prints a running balance, each Balance should equal the one before it plus the Amount on that row. If a number is off, the row where the balances stop matching tells you where to look.
An empty Amount or Balance cell means the value could not be read, or the statement does not print it. Look those rows up on the page image and type the value in after you export.
Importing the file, and where the limits are
CSV and XLSX files can be imported into most accounting software and opened in any spreadsheet. Amounts are plain numbers with a dot as the decimal separator and no currency symbols or thousands separators, so they add up without cleanup. Some programs expect their own column names, column order or date format; in that case, map or rearrange the four columns during import.
The tool extracts transactions and nothing else. It does not categorize spending, reconcile accounts or give financial advice. It does not connect to your bank; it only reads the file you upload. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened, so remove the password first. If you upload statements for several accounts together, they end up in one table in upload order, so keep one account per document if you want them apart.

Questions and answers
Is this bank statement converter free?
The first page of every statement is free and you do not need an account. Without an account you can try 1 document a day; a free account raises that to 3 a day and lets you download the result as a CSV file.
How much does a whole statement cost?
$5, paid once, for one document of up to 100 pages. There is no subscription and the unlocked document does not expire.
Can ChatGPT convert a bank statement to Excel?
For a short statement a chatbot often can. On long statements it tends to skip or merge rows and can mix up debits and credits, and those errors are hard to see because the table still looks complete. This tool reads every page separately, returns every transaction with a signed amount, and gives you an XLSX or CSV file to check against the closing balance.
Which columns do I get?
Four columns on every row: Date (YYYY-MM-DD), Description, Amount and Balance. Amount is a single signed number, negative for money leaving the account and positive for money coming in. Balance is the running balance if the statement prints one, and empty if it does not.
Does it work on scanned statements and credit card statements?
Yes to both. Every page is read as an image, so a scanned or photographed paper statement works like a PDF from the bank. You can upload PDF, JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF, GIF or BMP files, up to 25 MB each and up to 30 files per document. On credit card statements, purchases are negative and payments or refunds are positive.
Can I import the file into my accounting software?
CSV and XLSX can be imported into most accounting software and opened in any spreadsheet. Some programs expect specific column names or a specific date format, so you may need to map the four columns during import.
How do I know no transaction is missing?
Add up the Amount column and compare it with the statement: opening balance plus the total should equal the closing balance. If the statement prints a running balance, each Balance should equal the previous one plus the Amount on that row. Always do this check before relying on the file.
Is my statement private?
Only you can open your document. Pages are sent to an AI model provider for the sole purpose of reading them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Documents uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete any document yourself at any time.
What does Unlimited include?
Unlimited costs $29 a month or $180 a year and covers every tool on the site, with up to 500 pages a month and documents of up to 300 pages. You can cancel at any time.
