Why screenshots are not enough
Screenshots show a few messages at a time, often without full dates, and never the words inside a voice message. When the conversation is about an order and a deposit, a dispute, or messages someone may need to show the police or a school, the reader needs every message, in order, with its date and time.
What is inside Instagram's download
In Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information, choose your Instagram account, Messages and the JSON format. The .zip has one folder per conversation inside messages/inbox/ (under your_instagram_activity/), each with message_1.json (newest messages first, more files for long chats) and folders such as audio/ and photos/. Emoji and accented letters are stored in a broken encoding, so a 😊 reads 😊, and every time is a UTC timestamp.
Where a chatbot falls short
- It cannot hear the voice messages, which are separate audio files in the download.
- It cannot pick one conversation out of a download that holds all of them.
- It tends to copy or "fix" the scrambled text instead of repairing the encoding.
- Long conversations get summarised or cut off.
What the download cannot give you
Instagram exports the messages that still exist. Unsent messages and messages sent in vanish mode are gone, and no tool can bring them back. Conversations that use end-to-end encryption may be missing from the download.
What works
- Download your messages as JSON.
- Pick the conversation by name, repair the text and put the messages in date order.
- Transcribe each voice message where it was sent, and print the time zone and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the download on the cover.
Our Instagram DM to PDF tool does this: upload the .zip, type the person's name or username, check the first messages free with their voice messages written out, and get the whole conversation as one PDF for a one-time payment of $5.
