Translate PDF

Translate a PDF in full, page by page, even if it is a scan

Upload a PDF, choose a language and get every page translated in full as editable text. The first page is free, with no sign-up. Need the whole document? Unlock every page for $5: one payment, no subscription. A chatbot translates a page or two well, but on a long PDF it tends to summarize or stop partway. This tool translates each page separately, works on scanned PDFs, and gives you a Word file.

Translate a document

No sign-up. First page free. Whole document $5, one payment.

By continuing you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

  • First page free, no account needed
  • Whole document $5, one payment, no subscription
  • Every page translated in full, never summarized
  • 28 target languages, including English, Spanish, French, German and Chinese
  • Works on scanned PDFs and photos of pages
  • Edit beside the original page, then export Word (DOCX) or TXT

What you get back

Each page comes back as translated, editable text shown next to the image of the original page, so you can compare the two and adjust the wording. You get the translation as text in a Word or TXT file. You do not get a copy of the original PDF with the words swapped.

  • The complete translation of every page, in page order, with each page labeled.
  • The structure of the page as text: headings on their own line, paragraphs separated, list items on separate lines, tables row by row with a tab between cells.
  • Names, numbers, dates, amounts, codes, web addresses and email addresses left unchanged. Units and currencies are not converted.
  • Text that cannot be read in the source marked [illegible], never filled in.
  • One file for the whole document: Word (DOCX) or TXT.

Translating a PDF with a chatbot, and with this tool

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini translate well. For a short letter or a page pasted into a chat, they are a good choice. The trouble with a PDF is rarely the quality of the translation. It is getting all of it: every page, in order, from a scan if need be, and in a file.

Your situation A chatbot This tool
A one or two page digital PDF Usually translates it well Translates it and gives you the file
A 50-page document Tends to summarize, shorten or stop partway Translates every page separately, up to 100 pages per document
A scanned PDF with no selectable text May read it poorly, or not at all Reads every page as an image, so scans work the same way
Names, amounts and reference numbers Sometimes translates or reformats them Instructed to keep them exactly as in the source
You want to check a passage against the original Scroll back and forth in the chat Translation sits beside the original page, and you can edit it
You need a document to send or print Often leaves you copying text out of the chat Download Word (DOCX) or TXT

How to translate a PDF

  1. 1

Upload the PDF and pick a language

Drop in the PDF, or photos of the pages, and choose the language you want it translated into. The source language is detected from the page.

  2. 2

    Read the first page free

The translation appears next to the original page. Compare the two and edit anything in place. No account is needed for this step.

  3. 3

    Unlock the rest and export

Happy with the first page? Unlock the whole document for $5, then download the translation as Word or TXT.

Why long PDFs trip up general AI assistants

Translation itself is something chat assistants do well. The weak point is length. A reply in a chat has a practical size limit, and a 50-page contract does not fit in one. Faced with a long document, an assistant often translates the beginning and then switches to a summary, drops sections, or stops and waits for you to say "continue". Unless you compare page by page, you may not notice what is missing.

Scanned PDFs add a second problem. A scan has no text inside it, only a picture of each page. Depending on the assistant, a scanned PDF may be read badly or not read at all.

This tool removes both problems by working one page at a time. Every page is turned into an image, read, and translated on its own with the same instruction: translate everything, completely and faithfully, and never summarize, shorten, skip or add. Page 47 gets the same attention as page 1, and a scan is handled the same way as a digital PDF.

What people translate

  • Contracts, leases and terms you need to understand before signing
  • Letters from foreign authorities, banks and insurers
  • Manuals, instructions and product data sheets
  • Research papers, reports and articles
  • Scanned certificates and records, for your own understanding
  • Invoices and price lists from suppliers abroad

What it does not do

It does not rebuild the original PDF. Fonts, images, colors, page design and exact positions are not reproduced, and pictures are not described. You get the translated text with its structure of headings, paragraphs, lists and table rows, in a Word or TXT file. Tables arrive as rows of tab-separated text, not as formatted Word tables. If you need a translated document that looks identical to the original, this tool will give you the text for it, not the layout.

It is machine translation. It is well suited to understanding a document and to producing a working draft. For legal, official or immigration use, such as documents submitted to a court, a government office or a university, a certified human translation may be required. Check with the office that will receive it.

Getting a good translation

A clean source gives a better translation. Digital PDFs and sharp, straight scans read best; for photos, lay the page flat in good light and take one page per photo. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened, so remove the password first.

Start with the free first page. If the terminology is specialized, compare a few key terms with the original shown beside the translation and correct them in place before you export. Check names, amounts and dates on anything important: they are meant to stay exactly as in the source.

Questions and answers

Can I translate a PDF for free?

The first page of every document is translated free and you do not need an account. Without an account you can try 1 document a day; a free account raises that to 3 a day and lets you download the translation as a TXT file.

How much does it cost to translate a whole PDF?

$5, paid once, for one document of up to 100 pages. There is no subscription and the unlocked document does not expire.

Can ChatGPT translate a PDF?

For a short, digital PDF, yes, and usually well. On long documents a chatbot tends to summarize, skip sections or stop partway, it may not read scanned PDFs, and it often returns text in the chat instead of a file. This tool translates every page separately and in full, including scanned pages, and gives you a Word file.

Which languages can it translate into?

There are 28 target languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Hungarian, Indonesian and Thai. The source language is detected from the page, so you only choose the language you want.

Does it work on scanned PDFs, and what files can I upload?

Yes. Every page is turned into an image and read from that image, so a scanned PDF with no selectable text is translated the same way as a digital one. You can upload PDF files with one or many pages, or photos of pages as JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF, GIF or BMP, up to 25 MB each and up to 30 files per document.

Does the translated file keep the original layout?

No. You get the translated text in a Word (DOCX) or TXT file, with headings, paragraphs, lists and table rows kept as text. The fonts, images and visual layout of the original PDF are not reproduced.

Can I use the translation for official or legal purposes?

It is a machine translation, suited to understanding a document or preparing a draft. For legal, official or immigration use, a certified human translation may be required, so check with the office that will receive the document.

Is my document private?

Only you can open your document. Pages are sent to an AI model provider for the sole purpose of reading and translating them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Documents uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete any document yourself at any time.

What does Unlimited include?

Unlimited costs $29 a month or $180 a year and covers every tool on the site, with up to 500 pages a month and documents of up to 300 pages. You can cancel at any time.
