Handwriting to text

Cursive to text converter for old letters, diaries and handwritten notes

Upload a photo or scan and read it as editable text a minute or two later. The first page is free, with no sign-up. Need the whole document? Unlock every page for $5: one payment, no subscription. Unlike a chatbot, it transcribes line by line and marks the words it cannot read instead of making them up.

  • First page free, no account needed
  • Whole document $5, one payment, no subscription
  • Cursive, print and old scripts in English, German, Italian, Polish, Swedish and more
  • Unclear words are marked [like this?], never silently invented
  • Fix the text right next to the original page
  • Export as TXT or Word (DOCX)

What you get back

The text keeps the lines and paragraphs of the page, so you can check it against the original at a glance. A word the reader is unsure of comes back in brackets with a question mark. A word nobody could read comes back as [illegible]. Nothing is filled in to make the sentence sound right.

March 3rd, 1947

My dear Eleanor,

Your letter reached us on Tuesday and I have read it three times over. The snow is finally leaving the orchard and father says the Bramley trees came through the winter better than he feared.

We think of you every evening. Write soon, and tell us how the children are getting on.

Why a chatbot is the wrong tool for handwriting

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can look at a photo, and on neat modern handwriting they often do fine. They are built to give a fluent answer, though, and a fluent answer is the wrong goal when the job is to copy a page exactly. This is where the two approaches part ways.

Your situation A chatbot This tool
A neat, modern note Usually reads it Reads it line by line
Flowing cursive in an old letter Often skips lines or swaps names and dates Transcribes every line and keeps the layout
A word nobody can make out Tends to fill in something plausible Marks it [illegible] or [word?]
A 40-page diary One photo at a time, stitched together by hand One upload, page by page, one file out
Old German Kurrent or Sütterlin Often treats it as modern handwriting Told which script to expect before it reads
A name needs correcting Retype it in the chat and hope Edit the text beside the original page

How to convert handwriting to text

  1. 1

    Upload the pages

Take a photo with your phone or use a scan. JPG, PNG, HEIC and PDF all work, and you can add several pages at once.

  2. 2

    Read the first page free

The text appears next to the original page a minute or two later. Compare the two and fix any word in place.

  3. 3

    Unlock the rest and export

Happy with the first page? Unlock the whole document for $5, then download it as TXT or Word.

Why handwriting trips up general AI assistants

Reading handwriting is not the same task as answering a question about a picture. A chat assistant looks at the page once and writes what the page probably says. When the ink is faded, the letters run together or a name is unfamiliar, "probably" turns into a confident guess, and the guess reads so smoothly that you cannot tell where it happened.

For a grocery list that hardly matters. For a letter from 1943, a ship manifest or a baptism record it matters a great deal: the name, the date and the village are exactly the words that are hardest to read and most important to get right.

This tool is set up for the opposite behavior. It is instructed to copy, not to interpret: original spelling, original line breaks, no translation, no tidying up. Where it is unsure it says so in the text, so you know which three words to check against the page instead of rereading all of it.

What people convert

  • Family letters and postcards, including wartime correspondence
  • Diaries, journals and travel logs
  • Genealogy sources: parish registers, census pages, certificates, ship lists
  • Handwritten recipes and notebooks
  • Lecture and meeting notes
  • Manuscript drafts and marginal notes

Getting a good result from a photo

Lay the page flat in daylight, hold the phone straight above it and fill the frame with the page. Avoid the shadow of your hand and the glare of a lamp on glossy paper. One page per photo reads better than a two-page spread. If the first page comes back with many bracketed words, a sharper photo is the cheapest fix, and trying again costs nothing.

Old letters in other languages

Many families hold letters written in the language their grandparents arrived with. Choose the language before you upload: it tells the reader which alphabet, spelling and script to expect, which is the single biggest factor in a clean result.

Questions and answers

Is it free?

The first page of every document is free and you do not need an account. Without an account you can try 1 document a day; a free account raises that to 3 a day and lets you download the text as a TXT file.

How much does a whole document cost?

$5, paid once, for one document of up to 100 pages. There is no subscription and the unlocked document does not expire. Tax is included in the price shown.

Can ChatGPT read cursive handwriting?

Sometimes. On neat, modern handwriting a chatbot often gets most of it. On flowing cursive, faded ink or old scripts it tends to skip lines and to replace words it cannot read with words that sound right, without telling you. This tool is built to copy the page line by line and to mark every uncertain word, so you know what to check.

How accurate is it?

It depends on the handwriting and on the photo. Clear cursive usually comes back with only a few words to check; faded or cramped writing comes back with more words in brackets. Always check names, dates and places against the original. The first page is free so you can judge the result on your own document before paying.

Which languages and scripts does it read?

English, German (including Kurrent and Sütterlin), Italian, Polish, Swedish, Dutch, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Norwegian, Danish, Czech, Hungarian, Russian, Turkish and Latin church records. Pick the language before uploading, or leave it on automatic detection. The text stays in the original language; it is not translated.

What files can I upload?

Photos and scans as JPG, PNG, HEIC (iPhone), WebP or TIFF, and PDF files with one or many pages. Each file can be up to 25 MB and you can add up to 30 files to one document.

Can I correct and export the text?

Yes. The text sits next to the image of the page and you can edit it in place. A free account can download TXT; an unlocked document or a Unlimited plan adds Word (DOCX).

Is my document private?

Only you can open your document. Pages are sent to an AI model provider for the sole purpose of reading them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Documents uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete any document yourself at any time.

What does Unlimited include?

Unlimited costs $29 a month or $180 a year and covers every tool on the site, with up to 500 pages a month and documents of up to 300 pages. You can cancel at any time.
