PDF to Excel
Convert PDF to Excel, even when the PDF is a scan
Upload a PDF, a scan or a photo of a table and get its rows and columns as a spreadsheet. The first page is free, with no sign-up. Need the whole document? Unlock every page for $5: one payment, no subscription. A chatbot can handle a small table in a digital PDF. This tool also reads scanned pages, copies every value exactly as printed, and gives you a real XLSX or CSV file.
- First page free, no account needed
- Whole document $5, one payment, no subscription
- Works on digital PDFs, scanned PDFs and photos of printed tables
- Values copied exactly as printed: no rounding, no reformatting
- A cell it cannot read is marked [illegible], never made up
- Export XLSX (one sheet per table) or CSV
What you get back
Every table found on a page comes back as rows and columns, shown next to the image of the page so you can check the figures against the original before you export.
- One spreadsheet table for each table on each page, with the header row of the table as column names. A table with no header gets Column 1, Column 2 and so on.
- Every value copied as printed, including currency symbols, thousands separators and minus signs.
- Merged cells filled in: the value is repeated in every row it spans, so each row stands on its own when you sort or filter.
- Page headers, footers and page numbers left out, so they do not show up as stray rows.
- An XLSX file with one sheet per table, or a CSV file with the tables one below another.
PDF to Excel with a chatbot, and with this tool
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can pull a small table out of a digital PDF, and when that is the job they are a fine choice. Things get harder when the PDF is a scan, when the tables run for many pages, or when you need a spreadsheet file and not a table pasted into a chat.
| Your situation | A chatbot | This tool |
|---|---|---|
| One small table in a digital PDF | Usually extracts it correctly | Extracts it and gives you the file |
| A scanned PDF or a photo of a printed table | Often misreads cells, or cannot read the page at all | Reads every page as an image, so scans work the same way |
| Tables on 40 pages | Tends to do the first pages, then shorten or stop | Reads every page separately, up to 100 pages per document |
| Figures such as 1,204.50 or (310.00) | May round, reformat or shift a value into the next column | Copies each value as printed, one cell per value |
| A figure too faint to read | Tends to fill in a plausible number | Writes [illegible] in that cell |
| You need an .xlsx file | Often returns the table as text in the chat | Download XLSX or CSV |

Why PDF tables trip up general AI assistants
A PDF does not store a table as a table. It stores characters at positions on a page, and the rows and columns exist only for the eye. In a scanned PDF there are not even characters, only a picture of the page. Rebuilding the grid means deciding, for every number, which row and which column it belongs to.
A chat assistant can do this for a short, clean table. On a wide table, an empty cell or a merged cell can push every value after it one column to the right, and the result still looks like a tidy table. On a long document the assistant has to reproduce hundreds of rows in one reply, so it tends to shorten the output or stop. And what you get is often a table drawn in the chat window, which you then have to copy into a spreadsheet yourself.
This tool reads each page on its own and returns structured data: a list of columns and, for each row, exactly one cell per column, with empty cells left empty. It is instructed to copy values, not to interpret them, and to write [illegible] where a value cannot be read. Because the result sits beside the page image, a shifted column is easy to spot before you export.
What people convert
- Financial reports and annual accounts with pages of figures
- Price lists, catalogs and product sheets from suppliers
- Invoices and purchase orders with line items
- Scanned or printed tables that only exist on paper
- Research papers and government reports with data tables
- Timetables, rosters and inventory lists
How values and tables arrive in the spreadsheet
Values are copied the way they are printed. A plain number such as 1204.5 arrives as a number you can add up. A value printed with a currency symbol or a thousands separator, such as $1,204.50, is kept exactly like that and arrives as text, so nothing is silently changed. If you want to calculate with those cells, convert them in your spreadsheet after checking them.
Tables are kept separate. In the XLSX file each table gets its own sheet, named after its title or its page. A table that continues over several pages comes back as one table per page, in page order, and is not joined automatically. In the CSV file the tables follow one another in a single file. A page with no table but with clearly tabular content, such as label and value pairs or an itemized list, also comes back as a table.
Getting a clean result, and where the limits are
Digital PDFs and clean scans read best. For a photo, lay the page flat, shoot from directly above and fill the frame with the table. Very small print on a large page reads better if you split it into parts. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened, so remove the password first.
The tool extracts data. It does not carry over fonts, colors, borders, formulas or charts, and it does not turn a chart into numbers. No reader is perfect, so compare totals and key figures with the page shown beside the table, and look at any cell marked [illegible]. For bank and credit card statements, use our bank statement converter instead: it returns every transaction in one table with fixed columns.

Questions and answers
Is this PDF to Excel converter free?
The first page of every document is free and you do not need an account. Without an account you can try 1 document a day; a free account raises that to 3 a day and lets you download the result as a CSV file.
How much does a whole document cost?
$5, paid once, for one document of up to 100 pages. There is no subscription and the unlocked document does not expire.
Can ChatGPT convert a PDF to Excel?
For a small table in a digital PDF, a chatbot can usually do it. It is less reliable on scanned pages and on tables that run for many pages, where it may shift columns, round figures or stop partway, and it often returns the table as text in the chat. This tool reads every page as an image, copies values exactly and gives you an XLSX or CSV file.
Does it work on scanned PDFs and photos?
Yes. Every page is turned into an image and read from that image, so a scanned PDF, a photo of a printed table and a regular digital PDF are all handled the same way. A sharp, straight scan gives the best result.
What files can I upload?
PDF files with one or many pages, and images as JPG, PNG, HEIC (iPhone), WebP, TIFF, GIF or BMP. Each file can be up to 25 MB and you can add up to 30 files to one document.
Are the numbers changed in any way?
No. Values are copied as printed, with no rounding or reformatting. Plain numbers arrive as numbers; values printed with currency symbols or thousands separators are kept exactly as printed and arrive as text. A value that cannot be read is written as [illegible], never guessed.
What happens when a document has several tables?
Each table is kept separate. The XLSX file has one sheet per table, and the CSV file lists the tables one below another. A table that continues across pages comes back as one table per page, in page order.
Is my document private?
Only you can open your document. Pages are sent to an AI model provider for the sole purpose of reading them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Documents uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete any document yourself at any time.
What does Unlimited include?
Unlimited costs $29 a month or $180 a year and covers every tool on the site, with up to 500 pages a month and documents of up to 300 pages. You can cancel at any time.
