Amharic in Fidel, with English under it

Amharic is written in its own script, and the transcript is plain Unicode Ge'ez text: it can be copied into a document, searched and edited. English words said in the recording stay in English. For family members, lawyers or advisers who do not read Fidel, the English translation is chosen in advance and printed under each paragraph.

Tigrinya, Oromo and mixed recordings

Tigrinya uses the same script but is a different language, and it is not in the language list. For a Tigrinya recording, leave the language on Auto-detect rather than choosing Amharic, and judge the free first part. Afaan Oromo, written in Latin letters, is not in the list either.

Honest limits for Amharic

Amharic speech recognition is less established than for the largest languages, and noisy church or street recordings are harder still. The tool marks words it cannot make out as [inaudible] instead of guessing. The "redo with a more accurate model" option is not offered for Amharic; you can redo a job with a different spoken language.

Long Amharic recordings people bring

  • Sermons and religious teaching of an hour or more
  • Family recordings for relatives in the diaspora
  • Immigration and asylum interviews that need an English version
  • Radio programs and podcasts saved as a file

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Long Audio & Video to Text page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Is the Amharic in Ge'ez script?

Yes. Amharic is written in Ge'ez (Fidel) script; a Latin transliteration is not offered.

Can it transcribe Tigrinya?

Tigrinya is not in the language list. Leave the language on Auto-detect and check the free first part before paying.

What does a 2-hour sermon cost?

$5, once, for any recording up to 6 hours. A file of up to 15 minutes is free in full, downloads included.

Who can see my recording?

Only you. It is sent to an AI model provider to be transcribed and is not used to train models. Jobs started without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job at any time.
