What you get back
One PDF of the conversation, laid out to be read, printed or handed to someone else. A cover page names the conversation, the people in it, the period it covers, the time zone used and the file it was made from. Then come the messages, in order, grouped by day.
- Each message with its number, sender, date and time. Instagram stores times in UTC; they are converted to the time zone of your browser and the cover says which one.
- Voice messages written out word for word in a box at the point they were sent, with their length, file name and detected language.
- If you choose a translation, it appears under the original text and under each transcript. The original always comes first.
- Photos shown in the flow of the chat; videos as a still frame with their length; shared posts and links kept as links.
- Reactions listed under the message they were left on.
- An index of every voice message at the end, and the same content as plain text (TXT) and as a spreadsheet (CSV).
Doing it in a chatbot, and with this tool

How to turn Instagram DMs into a PDF

Request your messages from Instagram
In Instagram, open Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information. Pick your Instagram account, choose Some of your information → Messages, then Download to device. Set the date range, choose JSON as the format and click Create files.

Download the file when Instagram is ready
You get a notification and an email when it is ready, usually within a few hours. Download the .zip from the same page. If it comes in several parts, upload all of them together.

Drop the .zip here and type the person's name or username under "Which conversation". Pick a translation language if you need one. No account is needed. The first part of the chat appears in a few seconds, voice messages written out.

Why chat assistants cannot do this one
Instagram's download keeps each DM conversation in a folder under messages/inbox, with message_1.json for the newest messages and more files for older ones, plus audio and photos folders. Emoji and accented letters are stored as escaped bytes, so a smiley reads "😊". A voice message is only a file path; the words are in the audio. A chat assistant sees scrambled text and file names.
This tool repairs the text, joins every file of the conversation in date order, follows every attachment to its file, and sends each voice message to a speech model on its own.

What the download contains, and what it does not
Instagram includes the messages that are still in your account. Messages that were unsent or sent in vanish mode are gone and cannot be recovered by any tool. Conversations that use end-to-end encryption may be missing from Download your information. Instagram's files do not record which message a reply answered, so replies appear as ordinary messages in date order.
Voice messages are transcribed by an AI speech model, word for word, in the language spoken; unclear words are marked [inaudible]. The PDF is a readable record, not a certified transcript, and it does not prove on its own that a conversation took place. Keep the downloaded file unchanged: the SHA-256 fingerprint on the cover lets anyone confirm the PDF was made from it.

How do I save a whole Instagram DM conversation as a PDF?

Can I export just one Instagram conversation?
Instagram exports all your messages at once. Upload the whole download and type the name or username of the person; only that conversation is processed. If you leave the field empty, the longest conversation is used.
Are Instagram voice messages included in the download?
Yes, voice messages that are still in the conversation come as audio files next to the messages, and each one is transcribed where it was sent.
Should I choose JSON or HTML when I request the file?
JSON. It holds the exact time of every message and is read most reliably. HTML downloads are read too, but Instagram's HTML layout changes more often.
Can it translate the messages into English?
Yes, in the same pass. Choose English when you upload and every message and every voice-message transcript gets a translation printed underneath. The original always comes first.
What time zone are the times in?
Instagram stores every message in UTC. The tool converts the times to the time zone of the browser you upload from and prints that time zone on the cover.

Is the PDF accepted as evidence?
That is for the police, court or agency to decide. The PDF is a readable record with senders, dates, times and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the download, but it is not a certified transcript. Ask them what they need; many also want the original download.
Is my data private?
Only you can open your chat. The file you upload is deleted as soon as the chosen conversation has been taken out of it; other conversations in the download are not kept or sent anywhere. Voice messages and text go to an AI model provider only to transcribe and translate them, through routes that do not use your data for training. Chats uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days.
