Book summarizer

Summarize a whole book, chapter by chapter, from its full text

Upload a PDF, EPUB or Word book and get a summary of every chapter, in order, with key points, followed by an overview of the whole book, as a Word file. Each summary is written from the complete text of that chapter only, so nothing is guessed from the title or from what the book is famous for. The first chapter is free with no sign-up; a book of up to about 600 pages is $5 as one payment. Chatbots summarize short documents well, but with a 400-page PDF they tend to read the opening and fill in the rest.

What you get back

You get a Word file titled "Summary of" your book, and the same text as TXT. Before you download, each chapter summary is shown on screen and you can edit it; the downloads use your edits.

  • A heading for every chapter, with its page range where the book has page numbers, followed by the summary and a short list of key points.
  • An overview of the whole book at the top, written once every chapter is done.
  • Chapter titles as printed in the book; chapters that are only front matter (copyright page, dedication) are noted as such.
  • If a book is longer than the job allows, the chapters left out are listed at the end, so you know exactly what was covered.

Summarizing a book with a chatbot, and with this tool

For an article or a short report, a chatbot summary is usually fine. A whole book is a different case: the full text is far longer than what fits comfortably in one conversation, and you cannot see which parts were actually read.

Your situation A chatbot This tool
A 10-page report Usually summarizes it well Also fine, and gives you a Word file
A 400-page book May read the first chapters and generalize about the rest Sends each chapter in full and summarizes it separately
Knowing what was covered Hard to tell which pages were read One heading per chapter, with page ranges
A famous book Can mix in what it already knows about the book Instructed to use only the text of each chapter
Quotes and figures May paraphrase or invent a quote Names, terms and figures kept as in the text; no invented quotes
A summary in another language Possible, but long books still get cut Choose the language; every chapter is summarized in it

Why whole books trip up general AI assistants

A long PDF is hundreds of thousands of words. Assistants handle this by reading part of it, by working from a shortened version, or by answering from what they already know about the book. The summary can sound complete while large parts were never read, and there is no easy way for you to tell.

This tool splits the book into its chapters first: the chapter files of an EPUB, the headings of a Word file, or the "Chapter", "Part" and "Prologue" lines that open pages in a PDF (if a PDF has none, it is split into 15-page parts). Very short pieces such as a dedication are joined to the next chapter and very long chapters are split. Each chapter then goes to the model in full, with the instruction to summarize only that text, from start to end.

What people summarize

  • Course books and set reading, to revise or to decide which chapters to read closely
  • Long reports, inquiries and policy documents
  • Non-fiction for book clubs and reading notes
  • Theses and research monographs before a review or a defense
  • Books in another language, summarized in English or the reader's language

Limits worth knowing

The book needs selectable text. A scanned PDF has only page images: turn it into text with Scanned PDF to Word, then upload the Word file. Books with DRM cannot be opened. Chapter detection follows the book's own headings; a PDF without chapter headings is summarized in 15-page parts instead.

Summaries are written by an AI model from the text and can miss nuance: check anything you quote or rely on against the book. One payment covers about 600 pages in one file of up to 200 MB; Unlimited covers about 1,800 pages per job.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT summarize a whole book from a PDF?

It can summarize parts of it. With a long book it may read only part of the text, or rely on what it knows about a famous title, and you cannot easily see which pages were covered. This tool summarizes every chapter from its full text and labels each one.

Which files work?

PDFs with selectable text, EPUB without DRM, Word (.docx), plain text and Markdown, in one file of up to 200 MB.

How does it find the chapters?

From the book itself: chapter files in an EPUB, headings in a Word file, and lines such as "Chapter 3" or "Part Two" at the top of PDF pages. If a PDF has no chapter headings, it is summarized in 15-page parts.

Can I get the summary in another language?

Yes. Choose the language before you start; a Persian book can be summarized in English, or an English book in Spanish.

How long is each summary?

Choose short (about 120 words), standard (about 300 words) or detailed (about 600 words) per chapter, plus three to seven key points.

Does it work with scanned books?

Not directly. Convert the scan with Scanned PDF to Word first, then summarize the Word file.

Is it free?

The summary of the first chapter is free and shown on screen. A book of up to 30 pages is free in full. A longer book is $5, paid once.

Is my book private?

Only you can open your job. The text is sent to an AI model provider only to summarize it and is not used for training. Jobs uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job at any time.
