Scanned PDF to Word (OCR)

Scanned PDF to editable Word, page by page, in any script

Upload a scanned PDF or photos of pages, tell it the language and script, and get every page back as editable text in a Word file: Urdu in Nastaliq, Persian, Pashto, Arabic, Amharic and Tigrinya in Ge'ez, Hindi, Bengali and more. Right-to-left text comes back right to left, tables as tables, and words the reader was unsure of are highlighted for you to check. The first page is free with no sign-up; a book of up to 300 pages is $5 as one payment. A chatbot reads a page or two, but on a long scan it tends to skip pages, and in less common scripts it often swaps letters for those of a neighboring language.

Choosing the script helps most with Urdu Nastaliq, Pashto, Persian, Amharic and other scripts that general OCR misreads.

No sign-up. Up to 3 pages free in full. Longer: the first page free, the whole PDF $5, one payment.

By continuing you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

What you get back

You get a Word file you can edit, search and copy from, with the text of every page in the original language and script. Before you download, each page is shown on screen and you can correct it; the download uses your corrections.

  • One section of text per scanned page, separated by page breaks, each starting with a small "Page N" line so you can check it against the scan.
  • Paragraphs joined the way they are printed, headings on their own line, tables rebuilt as Word tables (right to left in right-to-left scripts).
  • Words the reader was not sure of are highlighted in yellow in the Word file and shown as [?word?] on screen and in the TXT file; unreadable parts are marked [illegible].
  • Running headers, footers and repeated page numbers left out, so the text reads continuously.

Reading a scanned book with a chatbot, and with this tool

Chat assistants read a clear photo of one page well, in many languages. A scanned book is hundreds of page images, often in a script that general OCR handles poorly, and the result has to be an editable file.

Your situation A chatbot This tool
One clear page in English Usually reads it well Reads it and gives you a Word file
An 80-page scanned PDF Tends to read the first pages and summarize or skip the rest Reads every page separately, up to 300 pages in one job
Urdu in Nastaliq Often writes Arabic or Persian letters for Urdu ones, or drops dots Told it is Urdu Nastaliq and to keep Urdu letters such as ٹ ڈ ڑ ں ے
Pashto, Amharic, Tigrinya Can confuse similar letters or vowel marks Script-specific instructions for each, and the page read at high resolution
Words it cannot read May fill the gap with a plausible guess Marks them [?like this?] and highlights them
Persian or Urdu tables Text only, or columns in the wrong order Word tables set right to left

Why scanned books trip up general AI assistants

A scanned PDF has no text inside, only pictures of pages. An assistant has to look at every picture and write out what it sees, and with hundreds of pages it tends to read the first few and work out the rest from context. That is a summary, not a transcription.

Scripts add a second problem. Urdu Nastaliq slopes and stacks letters, so dots and joins are easy to misread, and models trained mostly on Arabic and Persian tend to write Arabic ي or ك where Urdu needs ی or ک. Pashto has letters of its own, and Ge'ez writes a vowel as a small mark on each syllable. This tool reads each page on its own, at high resolution, with instructions for the script you choose, and asks the reader to mark uncertain words instead of guessing.

What people convert

  • Scanned Urdu, Persian and Pashto books for research, re-publishing or translation
  • Old family documents and letters typed or printed in Amharic, Tigrinya or Arabic
  • University readers and theses that exist only as scans
  • Court and immigration documents that must be translated, so they first need to be text
  • Religious and literary texts for study, search and quotation

Limits, and getting a good result

Scans at 300 dpi or clear phone photos read best; blurred, very small or heavily damaged print may produce more highlighted words. Handwritten pages are a different job: use Handwriting to Text. Layout is rebuilt as paragraphs and tables, not as a pixel copy of the page: columns become running text, and images are left out.

Fonts in the Word file are chosen for the script (for example Urdu Typesetting for Urdu); if your computer lacks the font, Word substitutes one, which you can change with one click. One payment covers up to 300 pages in up to 50 files of up to 200 MB; Unlimited covers 600 pages per job. To translate the result, upload the Word file to Translate Word Document.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT convert a scanned PDF to Word?

It can read a few clear pages. On a long scan it tends to read the first pages and summarize the rest, it does not return a Word file, and in Urdu Nastaliq or Ge'ez it often confuses letters. This tool reads every page with script-specific instructions and returns an editable Word file.

Which languages and scripts does it read?

Urdu (Nastaliq), Persian, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Sindhi, Kurdish (Sorani), Hebrew, Amharic and Tigrinya (Ge'ez), Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Sinhala, Burmese, Khmer, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Ukrainian, Greek, Armenian, Georgian and the main European languages.

Is the Word file right to left for Urdu and Persian?

Yes. Paragraphs and tables are set right to left when the text is in a right-to-left script, so it reads and edits naturally in Word.

What does it do with words it cannot read?

It writes its best reading inside [? ?] and the Word file highlights that word in yellow. Text that cannot be read at all is marked [illegible]. Nothing is filled in silently.

How many pages for $5?

Up to 300 pages in one job, in up to 50 files of up to 200 MB each. Unlimited covers 600 pages per job.

Can it translate the text too?

Not in the same step. Download the Word file and upload it to Translate Word Document, which keeps the layout and right-to-left tables.

Is it free?

The first page of every scan is read free and shown on screen. A scan of up to 3 pages is free in full. A longer scan is $5, paid once.

Are my scans private?

Only you can open your job. Page images are sent to an AI model provider only to read them and are not used for training. Jobs uploaded without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job at any time.
