Every line, on its timing.

The numbers and time codes of your file are kept exactly; only the words change. Right-to-left languages get the marks players need to show punctuation in the right place.

Khmer has no spaces between words

Khmer is written without spaces between words; a space marks the end of a phrase or clause instead. That changes how subtitle lines behave. Players wrap text at spaces, so a long Khmer line may not wrap where you expect, or at all.

The model keeps the line breaks of each subtitle and aims for at most two lines of about 42 characters where possible. Khmer subscript consonants and vowel signs each count as characters, so a line looks shorter on screen than its count, and some lines pass the guideline. Nothing is cut to fit, and every subtitle keeps its timing. If a line is too wide for your screen, edit it on screen and break it where a phrase ends.

Fonts and players

Khmer needs a font with correct shaping for subscript consonants and vowel signs. Current phones, browsers and computers handle it; some older TVs and media players put subscripts in the wrong place or show boxes. If that happens, play the file in VLC or a browser, or choose a Khmer subtitle font such as Noto Sans Khmer. The download is UTF-8 with a byte order mark.

Who needs Khmer subtitles

  • Cambodian families in the US, France and Australia sharing films with elders
  • Employers and aid groups with training and safety videos for Khmer-speaking staff
  • Buddhist temples organizing screenings
  • Teachers using films with Khmer and English on screen together

Accuracy

Khmer is a lower-resource language for AI translation, and its separate vocabulary for speaking to or about monks and royalty is easy to get wrong. Most lines should carry their meaning. Check the free part, fix lines on screen, and use a fluent reviewer before any public screening.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate an SRT file to Khmer?

For a short clip, sometimes well. Long subtitle files tend to come back cut off, with lines combined or renumbered, and from the first such slip the subtitles show at the wrong moments.

Why does a Khmer line not wrap in my player?

Players wrap at spaces, and Khmer has spaces only between phrases. Add a line break on screen where a phrase ends, and the download keeps it.

Can I translate Khmer subtitles into English?

Yes. Upload the Khmer file and choose English; you do not need to name the source language.

What is the price?

The first block is free on screen. Everything else in the job, up to 10,000 lines, is $5, once. Unlimited, $19 a week, allows up to 30,000 lines per job.

Are Lao and Thai available?

Yes. Both are separate targets in the list.
