Accents, diaeresis and Greek punctuation

Modern Greek has been written in the monotonic system since the early 1980s: a single accent mark, the tonos, on the stressed vowel, and a diaeresis where two vowels are read separately, as in ϊ and ϋ. The transcript is plain Unicode Greek written that way, so it sorts, searches and prints like any Greek document.

Greek ends a question with a mark that looks like an English semicolon (;). If you see one at the end of a sentence in your transcript, it is a question mark, not a typo. Keep that in mind before you run an English spell checker over the file.

Cypriot Greek and Greek from the diaspora

Cypriot Greek has its own sounds, words and rhythm, and standard Greek spelling does not cover all of them neatly. The transcript writes Cypriot speech in Greek letters as closely as it can; unusual words may be approximated or marked [inaudible]. Choose Greek as the spoken language and judge the free first part of a recording from Nicosia or Limassol before you pay. Pontic Greek is not a separate entry and is harder still.

Greek families in Australia, the US, the UK and Germany often switch into English or German mid-sentence. Those words are written in Latin letters in the language spoken. Older relatives telling stories in a village dialect may use words a younger reader has never seen written; they are kept as said rather than modernized.

No Greeklish, but English for readers who need it

Greeks often type in Greeklish on their phones, and spellings vary from person to person: the same letter can show up as "th", "8" or "u" depending on who types. A transcript in Greeklish would be inconsistent and hard to search, so the output is always in Greek script. When a lawyer, supervisor or partner does not read Greek, choose English under "Also translate"; each English paragraph sits under the Greek one it translates.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT transcribe an hour of Greek audio?

Chat assistants can be useful for a short Greek clip. On long recordings they often hit a file limit, shorten the text or stop partway, and they cannot timestamp a long file reliably. This tool transcribes each part of the recording in full and joins them in order.

Can I get the transcript in Greeklish?

No. Greek speech is written in Greek script with accents. Add an English translation for readers who do not read Greek.

Does it handle Cypriot Greek?

It writes Cypriot speech in Greek letters, as heard. Dialect words are where mistakes are most likely, so check the free first part.

What is the price for a long recording?

$5 once covers a recording of up to 6 hours. Up to 15 minutes is free in full. Unlimited costs $19 a week, covers up to 12 hours per job and can be cancelled any time.

Is it a certified translation?

No. Both the Greek transcript and the English are AI drafts to check. For an official document, give the relevant passages to a certified translator.
