Translate ASS subtitles to Portuguese, for Brazil or for Portugal
Upload .ass or .ssa scripts and get the dialogue back in Portuguese inside the same files, with styles, embedded fonts, positions and tags untouched. Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal) are two separate targets; this page starts with Brazil. The first part is free on screen without an account, and a job of up to 30 files and 10,000 lines costs $5, once.
- Portuguese (Brazil) preselected; Portuguese (Portugal) in the same list
- Typesetting, styles and [Fonts] copied from your script
- Accented letters such as ã, ç and ê saved in UTF-8 with a byte order mark
- Each file returned as .pt-BR.ass or .pt-PT.ass, several in one ZIP
- $5 once for up to 30 files and 10,000 lines
Two targets, because viewers notice
Brazilian and European Portuguese read differently in subtitles. A fridge is a geladeira in São Paulo and a frigorífico in Lisbon; something cool is legal or bacana in Brazil and fixe in Portugal; spelling differs in words such as fato and facto or registro and registo. A viewer in either country sees at once when a script was written for the other.
So choose the variety your audience reads. Portuguese (Portugal) is also the usual written standard in Angola and Mozambique. Running the same script once for each target gives you two separate files, named with .pt-BR and .pt-PT, from two jobs.
Inside the file, only the dialogue changes
An ASS event carries ten fields; the tool rewrites one of them, Text, and copies the others from your script. Tags at the start and end of a line never go to the model. Tags in the middle of a sentence, such as an {\i1} before a stressed word, are replaced by numbered markers, and the tool puts the original tag back where the marker lands in the Portuguese. If the model leaves a marker out, the tag is added at the end of that line, so it is never lost.
Comment lines and drawing lines are not sent at all, and karaoke lines stay in their original language unless you ask for them to be translated.
Who uses it
- Brazilian fans translating an English fansub of a new anime season
- Viewers in Portugal who want European spelling and vocabulary
- Groups releasing both Brazilian and European versions of one script
- Teachers preparing a styled bilingual script for Portuguese learners
How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Translate ASS Subtitles page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers
Can ChatGPT translate an ASS file to Portuguese?
For a handful of lines, it usually does a good job. A full episode tends to come back cut short, and override tags in braces may be altered on the way, so the script stops rendering the way it was typeset.
Can I get both Brazilian and European versions?
Yes. Run the files once with Portuguese (Brazil) and once with Portuguese (Portugal); each job returns its own files.
Will accented letters display correctly?
The download is UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which players and TVs recognize, so ã, õ, ç and the other accented letters show as written.
Can I translate Portuguese ASS subtitles into English?
Yes. Upload the Portuguese script and choose English; the source language is recognized from the text.
How much is it?
The first block is free to check on screen. The whole job, up to 30 files and 10,000 lines, is $5 paid once, and jobs of 150 lines or fewer are free in full. Unlimited is $19 a week, with up to 30,000 lines per job.
Is my script kept private?
Only you can see the job. The text is not used to train AI models, and jobs created without an account are deleted after 7 days; you can delete one sooner yourself.
