English and Persian subtitles on screen together

Persian is the subtitle language people ask NoCutoff for most. Upload an English subtitle file and every line is translated into Persian and shown under the English, on the original timing, so viewers who read either language can follow. Already have both files? Join them instead, free up to 3,000 lines. Translating is free for the first part, and a whole film is $5.

  • English on the upper line, Persian below it, both at the bottom of the screen
  • Right-to-left marks on every Persian line, so punctuation sits at the correct end
  • UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which older players and TVs need for Persian letters
  • Dari, with Afghan vocabulary and spelling, is a separate target in the list
  • Whole film up to 10,000 lines for $5; 150 lines or fewer free in full

Why two languages at once

In many Iranian families abroad, parents read Persian more easily and children read English more easily. With both lines on screen, everyone watches the same film without pausing to explain. The same layout suits people learning Persian, who want the English as a check, and learners of English who grew up with Persian.

This page is set to the stacked layout: one subtitle for each moment, English on top and Persian under it. If your player supports it, the split layout moves the English to the top of the screen instead, which leaves the bottom for Persian alone.

Persian that displays correctly

Persian subtitles often break in players in two ways: letters turn into symbols because the file is not in Unicode, or a question mark appears at the wrong end of the line. The file you download is UTF-8 with a byte order mark, and every Persian line starts and ends with an invisible right-to-left mark. The English line above it is left as it is.

If you are joining a Persian file you already have and its letters look like سلام or question marks, repair it first with the Fix Persian & Arabic Subtitles tool, then join.

Translate or join

  • Translate: one English file in, English and Persian out; the first part is free, the whole film $5
  • Join: an English file and a Persian file you already have, paired by time, no AI, free up to 3,000 lines
  • In both cases the first language is the one from your first file
  • Downloads as SRT, VTT or ASS, named for example Movie.dual.fa.srt

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Dual Language Subtitles page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT make English and Persian subtitles?

For a short scene, a chatbot writes both languages without trouble. For a whole film it tends to stop partway, since every line has to be written twice, and it adds no right-to-left marks, so Persian punctuation often shows at the wrong end.

Can Persian go on top instead?

The language of your file always comes first. To put Persian first, upload a Persian file and choose English, or join a Persian file and an English file with the Persian one first.

Can I get Dari instead of Persian?

Yes. Choose Dari in the list; it is translated with Afghan vocabulary and spelling.

What does it cost?

Joining two files is free up to 3,000 lines. Translated files of 150 lines or fewer are free in full; for a longer film the first part is free on screen and the whole film, up to 10,000 lines, is $5, once.

Will it play on my TV?

Most TVs read SRT. The file is UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which helps TVs show Persian letters; if yours ignores the top position in split layout, use stacked.

Is my file private?

Only you can open the job, the text is not used to train AI models, and jobs made without an account are deleted after 7 days.
