Every line, on its timing.

The numbers and time codes of your file are kept exactly; only the words change. Right-to-left languages get the marks players need to show punctuation in the right place.

Brazil and Portugal write subtitles differently

Brazilian and European Portuguese share grammar and most vocabulary, but subtitles reveal the differences quickly. Brazil uses você as the everyday "you" where much of Portugal uses tu; Brazilians say ônibus, trem and celular where Portuguese viewers expect autocarro, comboio and telemóvel; Brazil puts object pronouns before the verb (me chama) where Portugal puts them after (chama-me); and Portugal says estar a fazer where Brazil says estar fazendo.

So the list has two targets. This page selects Portuguese (Brazil). Choose Portuguese (Portugal) for viewers in Portugal, and consider it for Angola and Mozambique, whose written standard is closer to it.

What is copied and what is translated

Only the text of each subtitle is sent to the model. The time codes, the numbering and the order come straight from your file, and no subtitle is merged with another or split in two. Tags such as <i> and <font color> stay around the same words. If you upload SRT and download VTT, position codes such as {\an8} are left out, because browsers would display them as text.

Who uses it

  • Brazilian and Portuguese families abroad watching foreign series together

  • Distributors preparing separate subtitle files for Brazil and Portugal
  • Fans subtitling anime and K-dramas for Portuguese-speaking friends

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Subtitle Translator page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate an SRT file to Portuguese?

Short files, usually well. With a whole movie, chat assistants tend to stop partway through, run lines together or renumber them, and the Portuguese drifts out of sync with the speech.

Can I make a Brazilian and a European version?

Yes. Translate the file once with Portuguese (Brazil) and once with Portuguese (Portugal).

Is Spanish available too?

Yes. Spanish is one of the 81 targets.

Can I translate Portuguese subtitles into English?

Yes. Upload the Portuguese file and choose English; the source language, Brazilian or European, is recognized from the text.

How much is it?

The opening part is free to check on screen. All files in the job, up to 10,000 lines, are $5, paid once. Unlimited is $19 a week, with up to 30,000 lines per job.

Is my upload private?

Yes. Only you see the job, it is not used to train AI models, and jobs created without an account are deleted after 7 days.
