Spisovná or obecná čeština?

Czech has a wide gap between the written standard and the way people talk, especially in Bohemia. In conversation "dobrý" becomes "dobrej", "mléko" becomes "mlíko" and "okno" can become "vokno". The tool is instructed to write the words that were spoken, so a relaxed interview keeps its obecná čeština, while a formal lecture comes out close to spisovná čeština because that is how it was delivered.

For research this is usually what you want: the transcript shows how the person actually spoke. If you need standard Czech for a publication or a report, edit the quotes you use. Speakers from Moravia and Czech Silesia sound different again, and their forms are written as heard as far as the model can follow them.

Slovak, and recordings that mix the two

Czechs and Slovaks often talk to each other on the same call, each in their own language. Czech is in the language list and Slovak is not. Slovak passages may come out in Slovak, drift toward Czech spelling or be marked [inaudible]. For a recording that is mostly Slovak, set the spoken language to Auto-detect instead of Czech and read the free first part carefully before you decide.

Typical long Czech recordings

  • Interviews for a bakalářská or diplomová práce, needed word for word for the appendix
  • Lectures and seminars recorded on a phone or exported from Teams
  • Meetings of a company, school board or town council that need a written record
  • Family recordings for relatives abroad, with an English translation underneath

Checks worth doing before you use it

  • Names of people, streets and villages: they are written as they sound
  • Numbers, dates and amounts, which are easy to mishear in long sentences
  • Speaker labels: numbers are assigned per block of about ten minutes, so the same person can change number later on; fix them, then rename with Find and replace
  • Passages where people talk over each other, which are marked [inaudible] rather than guessed

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT transcribe a two-hour Czech seminar?

It can handle a short clip, but on a long recording chat assistants tend to hit a file limit or return a summary instead of every sentence. Here the recording is transcribed in parts of up to ten minutes and joined in order, with timestamps throughout.

Does the transcript keep diacritics?

Yes. Every háček, čárka and kroužek is kept as standard Unicode text, so it searches and prints correctly.

Will it correct spoken Czech into standard Czech?

No. It writes what was said. Edit the passages you quote if you need spisovná čeština.

What does one long recording cost?

$5, paid once, for a recording of up to 6 hours. A recording of up to 15 minutes is free in full. Unlimited is $19 a week for several long files; cancel any time.

Who sees my file?

Nobody but you. It is passed to an AI model provider for transcription only and is not used for training. A job started without an account is deleted after 7 days, and you can remove it yourself whenever you like.
