Every line, on its timing.

The numbers and time codes of your file are kept exactly; only the words change. Right-to-left languages get the marks players need to show punctuation in the right place.

A Latin alphabet with its own rules

Somali has been written in the Latin alphabet since 1972. The letters look familiar but carry Somali sounds: c stands for the throat sound Arabic writes as ع, x for a deep h, q for a k made far back in the mouth, and long vowels are doubled, as in aabo. Because the alphabet needs no special characters, Somali subtitles show up in any player and on any TV without font trouble.

Spelling still varies in practice, especially for names and for loanwords from Arabic, English and Italian. The model writes standard Somali spelling; change names on screen if your community spells them differently.

Why long films need more than a chat window

A subtitle file is a numbered list of time codes, each followed by one or two lines of text. When a long file goes into a chat, the assistant has to rewrite all of it, numbers and times included, and long replies are where it tends to stop or drift. This tool sends only the text, in blocks of up to 60 lines with neighboring lines as context, checks that every line returns under its own id, and copies the time codes from your file.

Who uses Somali subtitles

  • Somali families in Minnesota, Ohio, the UK and Scandinavia sharing films across generations
  • Schools and clinics with information videos for Somali-speaking parents
  • Mosques and youth groups running film or lecture nights
  • Teachers of Somali using films with the original line above the translation

Limits to keep in mind

Somali has less material for AI translation than the major world languages. Expect clear meaning on most lines, with some wording a native speaker would phrase differently, and regional vocabulary the tool does not choose between. Look at the free first part before paying; for public screenings, ask a fluent reader to check the file.

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Subtitle Translator page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate an SRT file into Somali?

It can handle a short clip. For a whole movie or series episode, chat assistants often stop before the end, merge short lines or renumber them, and the subtitles stop matching the video.

Will Somali display correctly on my TV?

Yes, in almost every case. Somali uses only standard Latin letters, so any subtitle font shows it.

Can I translate Somali subtitles into English or Arabic?

Yes. Upload the Somali file and choose English, Arabic or any of the 81 targets.

How is a season priced?

Upload all the episodes as one job: up to 30 files and 10,000 lines cost $5 together, paid once. The first part is free to check beforehand.

Who sees my subtitles?

Only you. They are sent to an AI model provider to be translated and are not used for training; jobs without an account are deleted after 7 days.
