How to subtitle a Burmese video in English

  1. 1

    Upload the video

Drop in one video file, up to 2 GB, or paste a public Google Drive or Dropbox link. Each video is its own job on this tool.

  2. 2

    Look at the free part

The first part appears as subtitles on screen. Compare a few lines with the video before you decide.

  3. 3

    Pay once and download

Pay $5 for the whole video, then download the English SRT or VTT and the Burmese SRT. In VLC, use Subtitle > Add subtitle file.

A family video nobody abroad can follow

Many Burmese families keep hours of video: a wedding, a monk’s visit to the house, grandparents telling how they left home, a reunion filmed on a phone. Children who grew up in the United States, Thailand, Malaysia or Australia may understand some spoken Burmese but not enough to follow a long talk, and a husband or wife from another background may understand none of it. English subtitles let the whole family watch the same video together.

A chat assistant is often the first thing people try. On a short clip it may do fine. On a three-hour file, the upload limit, the reply length and the lack of reliable timestamps usually end the attempt: the translation stops partway, or comes back as a summary with no times at all.

How the subtitles are made

The video is split into parts of up to ten minutes. In each part the AI listens to the Burmese and writes timed cues straight from the audio, sentence-sized and on screen for no more than seven seconds. Each cue is then translated into English with its start and end time kept, and code checks the order and overlaps of every cue across the whole video.

Burmese puts the verb at the end of the sentence and often leaves out the subject when it is clear from context, so an English line sometimes has to supply "he", "she" or "we". Where a line seems off, read it next to the Burmese SRT.

Myanmar script: Unicode, not Zawgyi

The Burmese SRT is standard Unicode Myanmar text. On a device still set up for the older Zawgyi font it can look scrambled; current phones, computers and VLC show it correctly. The English SRT has no such issue.

What to expect from the result

  • Timings sit close to the speech but are not frame-exact; fine-tune in a subtitle editor if needed
  • Names of people, monasteries and towns can be misheard, so check them against the Burmese SRT
  • Shan, Karen, Kachin, Chin or Rakhine passages are not in the language list and may come out as [inaudible] or wrong
  • Loud wedding music or a crowd at a festival makes mistakes more likely
  • The English is a translation made by AI, not a certified or sworn translation

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate a 3-hour Burmese video into English subtitles?

It often handles a short clip. A three-hour video usually runs into the audio length limit, and a full translation does not fit in one reply, so it tends to stop partway or summarize, and it cannot give reliable subtitle times.

What does a 3-hour video cost?

$5, once, for any video up to 6 hours. Unlimited, at $19 a week, covers up to 12 hours per video and every tool; cancel any time.

Can I show Burmese and English on screen together?

Yes. Switch the output to Bilingual before you start, and each subtitle shows the Burmese line above the English one.

Can I make Burmese subtitles for an English video?

Not with this tool. Burmese is not one of the subtitle languages, so translation into Burmese is not offered.

Is my family video private?

It is visible only to you. It goes to an AI model provider only to be processed and is not used to train models. Jobs started without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete it sooner.
