Every line, on its timing.

The numbers and time codes of your file are kept exactly; only the words change. Right-to-left languages get the marks players need to show punctuation in the right place.

Nastaliq, Naskh and what your player shows

Urdu readers expect Nastaliq, the slanting calligraphic style of Urdu books, newspapers and phone keyboards. A subtitle file contains only text, not a font, so the style on screen depends on the player and the device. Many TVs and players show Urdu in a Naskh-style Arabic font, which is readable but looks less natural. If your player lets you choose a subtitle font, pick a Nastaliq font installed on that device, such as Noto Nastaliq Urdu.

The text is the same either way: plain Unicode Urdu, saved as UTF-8 with a byte order mark so older players recognize it.

Punctuation on the correct side

Urdu runs right to left, and many players lay out subtitles left to right unless the text tells them otherwise. The result is a question mark (؟) or full stop (۔) at the wrong end of the line. The tool adds an invisible right-to-left mark at both ends of every Urdu line, which fixes this in VLC, browsers and most TV players.

Who translates subtitles into Urdu

  • Families in the UK, the US and the Gulf watching English, Korean or Chinese dramas with parents
  • Teachers using English documentaries with Urdu-speaking students
  • Course creators reaching learners in Pakistan and India
  • Lectures recorded in English or Arabic, subtitled for Urdu audiences

Things the tool does not do

It does not write Roman Urdu, Urdu in Latin letters; the output is always in Urdu script. It is machine translation, so poetry, wordplay and very colloquial dialogue may need a human touch: read the free first part and edit lines on screen before you download. Older Urdu subtitle files saved in a Windows Arabic code page are not detected automatically, so re-save such a file as UTF-8 before uploading it as a source.

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Subtitle Translator page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate an SRT file to Urdu?

Short files usually go fine. A full movie often has more than a thousand lines, and pasted into a chat it tends to come back incomplete or with lines merged and renumbered, which pushes the subtitles out of sync.

Can I get subtitles in Roman Urdu?

No. Urdu comes back in Urdu script. If your audience reads Hindi in Devanagari, Hindi is a separate target.

Can a Hindi subtitle file be turned into Urdu?

Yes. Upload the Hindi file and choose Urdu; it comes back in Urdu script, with Urdu words where the two languages differ. The source language is recognized automatically.

Can I keep the English line too?

Yes. Choose bilingual output to show the original line above the Urdu on the same timing.

What do I pay?

The first block is free to see. A whole job, up to 30 files and 10,000 lines, is $5 paid once, not a subscription. Files with 150 lines or fewer in total are free in full.

Is my file private?

Only you can see the job. It is sent to an AI model provider for translation, is not used to train AI models, and you can delete it whenever you like.
