Every line, on its timing.

The numbers and time codes of your file are kept exactly; only the words change. Right-to-left languages get the marks players need to show punctuation in the right place.

Sinhala script on screen

Sinhala has its own rounded script, with vowel signs that attach on any side of a consonant and some letters joined into ligatures. The translation is written in standard Unicode, which current Android and iPhone versions, Windows, macOS and browsers display without extra fonts. The download is UTF-8 with a byte order mark.

Older Sinhala text was sometimes typed with non-Unicode fonts that put Sinhala shapes on Latin letters. Such files read as nonsense without that font, and this tool cannot read them as Sinhala, so use a Unicode file as your source.

Spoken and written Sinhala

Sinhala has a written form with grammar and verb endings that people do not use in conversation. Film and series subtitles usually lean toward the spoken style so dialogue sounds natural, while documentaries and lectures suit the written style. The model reads the lines around each subtitle to judge tone and formality; if the result feels too formal or too casual for your viewers, edit the lines on screen before downloading.

Who needs Sinhala subtitles

  • Sri Lankan families abroad, in Italy, the Gulf, Australia, the UK or Korea
  • Teachers using English-language documentaries in Sri Lankan classrooms
  • Buddhist centers subtitling talks recorded in English
  • Fans of Korean, Japanese and Indian films sharing subtitles with friends

What to expect from the translation

Sinhala is a lower-resource language for AI translation. Expect clear meaning on most lines, with some sentences that sound translated rather than written. The first part is free so you can judge it on your own file. For a cinema release, festival or broadcast, have a fluent reader go through the whole file.

How the tool works, what it costs and how your files are handled is on the Subtitle Translator page; prices for every tool are on the pricing page.

Questions and answers

Can ChatGPT translate an SRT file into Sinhala?

It may manage a few minutes of subtitles. With a full film, chat assistants tend to run out partway, merge entries or renumber them, so the Sinhala no longer appears with the right speech.

Can I get Sinhala in English letters?

No. The output is Sinhala script only.

Can I translate Sinhala subtitles into English?

Yes, if the file is Unicode Sinhala. Upload it and choose English; the source language is detected from the text.

What does it cost?

The first part is free to view. Every file in the job, up to 10,000 lines, is $5, paid once rather than as a subscription. Files with 150 lines or fewer in total are free in full.

Can both languages be shown?

Yes. Bilingual output shows the original line above the Sinhala, at the same moment.
