When you have the audio but not the transcript
Many courts and tribunals record their hearings, and a party can often get a copy of the audio long before, or instead of, a typed transcript. Immigration and employment tribunals, small claims, family hearings and depositions all produce recordings that run for hours. Listening back to find the one minute where a witness changed their account is slow work.
This page assumes the recording was obtained lawfully, for example the court's own recording released to you or a deposition recorded with everyone's knowledge. Rules on recording and on using recordings differ by court and country, so check them before you rely on anything here.
Not an official court transcript
An official transcript is usually produced or certified by a court reporter or an approved transcription service. This is not that. It is made by an AI speech model and it can mishear names, numbers and legal terms, especially when people talk over each other or sit far from the microphone. Do not file it as a transcript without checking your local rules and the audio.
What it does well is give you the whole hearing as searchable text. Search for a word, read the paragraph, note the timestamp, and play that point in the recording to confirm the exact wording before you quote it in a letter, an appeal or a witness statement.
Speakers and timestamps on a long hearing
The audio is processed in parts of up to ten minutes. Every paragraph gets a label such as "Speaker 2:", and names are used only when they are said aloud. Numbers are assigned per part, so on a four-hour hearing the judge may be Speaker 1 in one part and Speaker 3 in another. Read a few turns, then use Find and replace on screen to set Judge, Counsel for the applicant, Respondent, Witness and so on.
Timestamps such as [2:14:50] count from the start of the file. If the hearing came as several files, upload them together in name order and the times run on across them.

Questions and answers
Can I file this as the official transcript?
Not without checking your court's rules. It is an AI draft, not a certified record; use it to find and quote passages, and confirm them against the audio.
Why does ChatGPT stop partway through a hearing recording?
Chat assistants limit how long an uploaded file can be, and a multi-hour transcript does not fit in one reply, so it tends to be cut short or summarized. Here each part is transcribed in full and the parts are joined in order.
How much is a 3-hour hearing?
$5, paid once, for one recording of up to 6 hours. Longer hearings fit Unlimited, $19 a week, which covers up to 12 hours per job and can be canceled any time.
Does the AI add its own interpretation?
No. The summary is neutral and lists topics as they came up; it does not assess credibility or code the testimony.
Who can see the recording?
Only you. It goes to an AI model provider only for processing, is not used for training, and you can delete the job whenever you want.
