Text to audiobook

Turn a book or long document into an audiobook, chapter by chapter

Upload an EPUB, a Word document, a PDF with selectable text or a plain text file, and the whole text is read aloud by an AI narrator. Chapters are found from the book itself, and you download one MP3 per chapter in a ZIP, or the whole book as one MP3. Listen to the opening part on screen for free. A text of up to 5,000 characters is free in full; a longer one costs $5, paid once, for up to 600,000 characters, about 100,000 words.

What you get back

Audio files of the whole text that any phone, car stereo or audiobook app can play.

  • A ZIP with one MP3 per chapter, named and numbered in reading order, such as "03 The Long Road.mp3", with title, album and track tags.
  • Or one MP3 of the whole text, if you prefer a single file.
  • Mono speech audio at a size that suits phones: about 22 MB per hour of listening.
  • Every part playable on screen as soon as it is read, with its text underneath.
  • The text that was read, as a TXT file, so you can follow along or check what the narrator said.

Doing it in a chatbot, and with this tool

Chat assistants with voice mode can read a few paragraphs out loud in the app. A book needs every page read and handed back as files you can keep.

What you need A chatbot This tool
Hear a paragraph read out Often fine in voice mode Also fine: the opening is free to listen to
A whole book as audio files No file to download; long text stops partway Every chapter read and saved as an MP3
Chapters as separate tracks Not available One MP3 per chapter, numbered and tagged
A 300-page EPUB or PDF Too long to paste in one go Up to 100,000 words in one job
Listening offline in the car Needs the app and a connection MP3 files that play anywhere

How to turn a text into an audiobook

  1. 1

    Upload the text

Drop an EPUB, DOCX, PDF with selectable text, TXT or Markdown file of up to 50 MB. Copy-protected ebooks cannot be opened.

  2. 2

    Listen to the opening

The chapters are listed and the opening part is read aloud on screen within a minute, so you can hear the voice before paying.

  3. 3

    Unlock and download

Pay $5 once to have the whole text read, then download one MP3 per chapter in a ZIP, or the whole book as one MP3.

Why a chat assistant will not make you an audiobook

Voice features in chat assistants are made for conversation. They read a reply out loud while you listen, but they do not give you an audio file, and a long text pasted into a chat is cut off or summarized long before the end of a book. Getting a 90,000-word manuscript into audio that way would mean hundreds of rounds of copy, play and record.

This tool reads the file itself. It finds the chapters, splits each one into parts of about 2,500 characters at paragraph and sentence breaks, has every part read by a text-to-speech model, and joins the parts of each chapter into one MP3 without re-encoding them. Each part appears on screen as soon as it is ready, so you can listen while the rest is still being read.

What people use it for

  • Authors listening to their own manuscript to catch awkward sentences, or sharing a draft with beta readers
  • Students turning course readings, theses and long reports into something to listen to on the way
  • Public domain books that never had an audiobook edition
  • Long articles, newsletters and documentation for listening instead of reading
  • Texts in languages with few audiobooks available, such as Persian

Preparing the file

EPUB and Word files give the best chapters: each EPUB section, or each Heading 1 or Heading 2 in Word, becomes a track. In plain text and PDF, lines such as "Chapter 7", "CHAPTER VII", "Part Two", "Prologue" or a Markdown heading start a new chapter; without them the text is read as one long track. Very short sections such as a cover page are joined to the next chapter.

PDFs are read from their text layer. Page numbers, running headers and footnotes in a PDF are part of that text and may be read aloud, so an EPUB or DOCX of the same book usually sounds cleaner. Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be read; convert them to text first.

The voice and its limits

Every job is read by one AI narrator voice. It handles normal punctuation, dialogue and paragraphs, but it does not act out different characters, and unusual names, abbreviations and numbers may be pronounced in unexpected ways. Listen to the free opening in your language before paying.

Ebooks with copy protection from online stores cannot be opened. Use the tool for texts you wrote or have the right to turn into audio.

Questions and answers

How do I turn a book into an audiobook?

Upload the EPUB, DOCX, PDF or TXT here and listen to the free opening. Pay $5 to have the whole text read, then download one MP3 per chapter in a ZIP.

Can ChatGPT turn my book into an audiobook?

Its voice mode can read a few paragraphs out loud in the app, but it does not hand you audio files, and a whole book is far too long for one chat. This tool reads the entire file and gives you MP3s you can keep.

How long a text can I convert?

Up to 600,000 characters for one payment, about 100,000 words or around 13 hours of audio. Unlimited allows 1,500,000 characters per job.

Which languages can it read?

English and many other languages, including Persian; the narrator reads the language the text is written in. Listen to the free opening in your language before you pay.

Can I choose the voice?

Not yet. Every job is read by the same AI narrator voice, which you can hear in the free opening.

Can I upload a Kindle or Apple Books file?

Not if it is copy-protected. DRM-free EPUB files, Word documents, PDFs with selectable text, TXT and Markdown work.

How much does it cost?

A text of up to 5,000 characters is free in full. A longer one is $5, paid once, for up to 600,000 characters. Unlimited costs $19 a week and renews weekly.

Is my manuscript private?

Only you can open your job. The text is sent to an AI model provider only to be read aloud and is not used to train models. Jobs started without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job yourself at any time.
