Voice memos to text
Transcribe all your voice memos into one dated document
Months of voice memos are hard to search and impossible to skim. Upload them, up to 200 files or one ZIP, and every memo is transcribed word for word, sorted by the day and time it was recorded, under a heading with that date. You get one Word, PDF or TXT document, a spreadsheet with one row per memo, and a separate text file for each. Memos of up to 15 minutes in total are free in full; more cost $5, paid once, for up to 6 hours in total.
- iPhone Voice Memos (.m4a, .qta), Android recorder files (.m4a, .mp3, .amr, .3gp, .ogg) or a ZIP
- Up to 200 memos, 6 hours of audio in total, for one payment (12 hours on Unlimited)
- Sorted by recording date and time, oldest first
- Each memo under a heading such as "2 May 2024, 08:14 · Kitchen ideas.m4a"
- A CSV with date, time, duration, file name and text for every memo
- Optional translation under every paragraph
- Up to 15 minutes in total free in full · all memos $5, one payment
What you get back
Every memo written out, in the order you recorded them, in files you can search, print or sort.
- One Word, PDF or TXT document that starts with a list of all memos, their dates and durations.
- Each memo under its own dated heading, with a timestamp at the start of every paragraph.
- A CSV spreadsheet with one row per memo: date, time, duration, file name and the full text.
- A ZIP with a TXT and an SRT for every memo.
- Unclear words marked [inaudible] rather than guessed; identical files uploaded twice counted once.
Doing it in a chatbot, and with this tool
A chat assistant can transcribe a short clip you attach. A phone full of memos means dozens of uploads, and the date of each recording is lost on the way.
| What you need | A chatbot | This tool |
|---|---|---|
| One short memo written out | Often fine | Also fine, and free in full up to 15 minutes |
| Eighty memos from the last year | One upload at a time, limited per day | Up to 200 memos or one ZIP in a single job |
| When each memo was recorded | Not known from the audio | Read from the file name or the file itself |
| Memos in the right order | Whatever order you upload them in | Sorted by recording date and time |
| A list you can sort and filter | Text in a chat window | A CSV with one row per memo |

Why a pile of voice memos trips up a chat assistant
Voice memos are many short recordings, and their value is in when they were made: the idea from Tuesday morning, the call notes from the 14th. A chat assistant takes one attachment at a time, often with a daily limit on audio, and the text it returns carries no date. Putting a year of memos together that way means renaming, uploading and copying, memo by memo.
This tool takes the whole folder at once. Each memo gets its recording time from the file name when it has one (many Android recorders write names such as "Recording_20240502_081400"), otherwise from the date stored in the file itself (iPhone memos carry one), and otherwise from the date saved in your ZIP. The memos are then transcribed and put in date order, each under its own heading.
What people use it for
- Ideas, journal entries and to-do lists recorded on walks or in the car
- Notes from calls, site visits and client meetings recorded on the phone
- Song ideas and lyrics hummed into the recorder, to find the one from last spring
- Recorded lectures and study notes spread over a whole term
- Memos from a family member, kept and read in the order they were made
Dates and times
A time found in the file name is used exactly as written. A recording time stored inside the file is shown in your own time zone, which your browser tells us when you upload; if the file stores its local time together with its offset, that local time is used as is. When no date can be found, the memo is placed after the dated ones, by name, and its heading shows only the file name.
A memo renamed on the phone, such as "Kitchen ideas", usually keeps the date stored inside the file. Files that went through messaging apps or converters sometimes lose it; the date saved in your ZIP is then the fallback, and you can always check the order in the list at the top of the document.
Accuracy and limits
Memos recorded in a pocket, in wind or in traffic are harder to hear; unclear words are marked [inaudible] instead of guessed. Each memo is transcribed in the language spoken in it, and 77 languages can be chosen as a hint or a translation.
One payment covers up to 200 files and 6 hours of audio in total. A larger archive goes in several jobs, or on Unlimited with 12 hours per job.

Questions and answers
How do I transcribe all my voice memos at once?
Copy the memos off your phone, upload them here or upload one ZIP of the folder. Every memo is transcribed in date order; pay $5 once and download one document with all of them.
Can ChatGPT transcribe all my voice memos?
It can transcribe a short memo you attach. For dozens of memos it means one upload at a time, and the date of each recording is lost. This tool takes the whole folder and keeps every memo's date.
Does it keep the date and time of each memo?
Yes. The date comes from the file name, from the date stored in the file (iPhone memos have one) or from the ZIP, and is shown in each memo's heading and in the CSV.
How do I get voice memos off my iPhone?
In the Voice Memos app, select the memos and share them to Files or AirDrop them to your computer. On a Mac, drag them out of the Voice Memos app into a folder. Upload the files or a ZIP of the folder.
Which files work?
M4A and QTA from iPhone, M4A, MP3, AMR, 3GP, OGG and OPUS from Android recorders, WAV and most other audio, or a ZIP containing them. Up to 200 files per job.
Can I get it as a spreadsheet?
Yes. The CSV has one row per memo with date, time, duration, file name and the full text, and opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
How much does it cost?
Memos of up to 15 minutes in total are free in full. More are $5, paid once, for up to 6 hours in total. Unlimited costs $19 a week and renews weekly.
Are my memos private?
Only you can open your job. The recordings are sent to an AI model provider only to be transcribed and are not used to train models. Jobs started without an account are deleted after 7 days, and you can delete a job yourself at any time.
