FULL TRANSCRIPT

[0:00] Good morning, church. Please open your Bibles with me to the Gospel of Luke, chapter 15. This morning we continue our series on the parables, and today we read the story that many of us know as the prodigal son.

[0:10] Verse 11. There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, Father, give me my share of the estate. And Jesus tells us that not long after that, the younger son got together all he had and set off for a distant country.

[0:27] I want to give you three things to notice this morning. The first is the distance. The son does not just leave the house. He goes to a distant country. Sometimes we move away from what matters slowly, one small step at a time, until one day we look up and realize how far we have traveled.

[0:44] The second thing is the moment in verse 17, when he came to his senses. The Greek literally says, when he came to himself. Before he could go home, he had to be honest about where he was. Repentance begins with hon-

[1:00] estate. And the third thing, the most important, is the father. Verse 20, "While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him. He ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him." In that culture, an older man did not run. The father gave up his dignity to welcome his son home.
→ finca.

[1:23] The prophet Isaiah says it this way in chapter 55, verse 7: "Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them." That is the heart of the gospel.

[1:33] So this week, I want to leave you with one question: Where is your distant country? And what would it look like to take one step home? If you need someone to pray with you, our prayer team will be at the front after the service. Let's pray.
Oremos.
